India Earns a Bronze Medal in Men’s Double 1000m Sprint at the 2023 Asian Games Canoeing Competition

The Indian team of Sunil Singh Salam and Arjun Singh made history by winning a bronze medal in the men’s canoe double 1000m sprint event at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This was only India’s second medal ever in canoeing at the Asian Games, with the first one being a bronze won back in 1994.

Competing at the Fuyang Water Sports Centre, Sunil Singh Salam and Arjun Singh completed their race in 3 minutes and 53.329 seconds to secure a spot on the podium.

The gold medal in this event went to Shokhmurod Kholmuradov and Nurislom Tukhtasin Ugli of Uzbekistan, who finished with a time of 3 minutes and 43.796 seconds. The bronze medal was claimed by the Kazakhstan team of Timofey and Sergey Yemelyanov, with a time of 3 minutes and 49.991 seconds.

In other events on the same day, Soniya Devi Phairembam finished in eighth place in the women’s Kayak Single 500m race, completing it in 2 minutes and 14.555 seconds. Soniya was also part of the women’s kayak four 500m team, along with Binita Chanu Oinam, Parvathy Geeta, and Dimita Devi Toijam, which also finished eighth with a time of 1 minute and 55.420 seconds.

Kaveri and Neha Devi Leichonbam also came in eighth place in the women’s canoe double 200m race.

The canoe sprint events at the Asian Games 2023 concluded on Tuesday, and the slalom events are scheduled to start on October 5.
